sched: Use bitmask for sched_busy_hysteresis_enable_cpus tunable
The current code is using a bitmap for sched_busy_hysteresis_enable_cpus tunable. Since the feature is not enabled for any of the CPUs, the default value is printed as "\n". This is very inconvenient for user space applications which tries to write a new value and try to restore the previous value. Like other scheduler tunables, use the bitmask to avoid this issue. mm: reclaim small amounts of memory when an external fragmentation event occurs
An external fragmentation event was previously described as
When the page allocator fragments memory, it records the event using
the mm_page_alloc_extfrag event. If the fallback_order is smaller
than a pageblock order (order-9 on 64-bit x86) then it's considered
an event that will cause external fragmentation issues in the future.
The kernel reduces the probability of such events by increasing the
watermark sizes by calling set_recommended_min_free_kbytes early in the
lifetime of the system. This works reasonably well in general but if
there are enough sparsely populated pageblocks then the problem can still
occur as enough memory is free overall and kswapd stays asleep.
This patch introduces a watermark_boost_factor sysctl that allows a zone
watermark to be temporarily boosted when an external fragmentation causing
events occurs. The boosting will stall allocations that would decrease
free memory below the boosted low watermark and kswapd is woken if the
calling context allows to reclaim an amount of memory relative to the size
of the high watermark and the watermark_boost_factor until the boost is
cleared. When kswapd finishes, it wakes kcompactd at the pageblock order
to clean some of the pageblocks that may have been affected by the
fragmentation event. kswapd avoids any writeback, slab shrinkage and swap
from reclaim context during this operation to avoid excessive system
disruption in the name of fragmentation avoidance. Care is taken so that
kswapd will do normal reclaim work if the system is really low on memory.
This was evaluated using the same workloads as "mm, page_alloc: Spread
allocations across zones before introducing fragmentation".

Note that external fragmentation causing events are massively reduced by
this path whether in comparison to the previous kernel or the vanilla
kernel. The fault latency for huge pages appears to be increased but that
is only because THP allocations were successful with the patch applied.

There is a large reduction in fragmentation events with some jitter around
the latencies and success rates. As before, the high THP allocation
success rate does mean the system is under a lot of pressure. However, as
the fragmentation events are reduced, it would be expected that the
long-term allocation success rate would be higher.

Commit 32a5ad9c2285 ("sysctl: handle overflow for file-max") hooked up
min/max values for the file-max sysctl parameter via the .extra1 and
.extra2 fields in the corresponding struct ctl_table entry.
Unfortunately, the minimum value points at the global 'zero' variable,
which is an int. This results in a KASAN splat when accessed as a long
by proc_doulongvec_minmax on 64-bit architectures:

sysctl: handle overflow for file-max
[ Upstream commit 32a5ad9c22852e6bd9e74bdec5934ef9d1480bc5 ] Currently, when writing echo 18446744073709551616 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max /proc/sys/fs/file-max will overflow and be set to 0. That quickly crashes the system. This commit sets the max and min value for file-max. The max value is set to long int. Any higher value cannot currently be used as the percpu counters are long ints and not unsigned integers. Note that the file-max value is ultimately parsed via __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax(). This function does not report error when min or max are exceeded. Which means if a value largen that long int is written userspace will not receive an error instead the old value will be kept. There is an argument to be made that this should be changed and __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax() should return an error when a dedicated min or max value are exceeded. However this has the potential to break userspace so let's defer this to an RFC patch. This bug has apparently existed since the introduction of this function in the pre-git era (4500e91754d3 in Thomas Gleixner's history.git, "[NET]: Add proc_dointvec_userhz_jiffies, use it for proper handling of neighbour sysctls."). As a minimal fix we can simply duplicate the corresponding check in do_proc_dointvec_conv(). If the number of input parameters is less than the total parameters, an
EINVAL error will be returned.
For example, we use proc_doulongvec_minmax to pass up to two parameters
with kern_table:

When passing two parameters, it's work normal. But passing only one

There are three processing functions dealing with digital parameters,
__do_proc_dointvec/__do_proc_douintvec/__do_proc_doulongvec_minmax.
This patch deals with __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax, just as
__do_proc_dointvec does, adding a check for parameters 'left'. In
__do_proc_douintvec, its code implementation explicitly does not support
multiple inputs.

So, just __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax has the problem. And most use of

sysctl: Limit sched_upmigrate/sched_downmigrate tunables range
The sched_upmigrate/sched_downmigrate tunable values are accepted in percentage. Hence don't accept any values greater than 100. The sched_upmigrate is also used to check if a CPU is overutilized or not. Accepting a large value for this tunable makes a heavily loaded CPU not getting classified as overutilized. Since the CPUs are not overutilized, the higher capacity CPUs does not offer help to the heavily loaded lower capacity CPUs. The no-hz idle balance kicks are also not sent to the CPUs with in the same cluster. This results in starvation. mm: make faultaround produce old ptes
Based on Kirill's patch [1]. Currently, faultaround code produces young pte. This can screw up vmscan behaviour[2], as it makes vmscan think that these pages are hot and not push them out on first round. During sparse file access faultaround gets more pages mapped and all of them are young. Under memory pressure, this makes vmscan swap out anon pages instead, or to drop other page cache pages which otherwise stay resident. Modify faultaround to produce old ptes if sysctl 'want_old_faultaround_pte' is set, so they can easily be reclaimed under memory pressure. This can to some extend defeat the purpose of faultaround on machines without hardware accessed bit as it will not help us with reducing the number of minor page faults. Making the faultaround ptes old results in a unixbench regression for some architectures [3][4]. But on some architectures like arm64 it is not found to cause any regression. unixbench shell8 scores on arm64 v8.2 hardware with CONFIG_ARM64_HW_AFDBM enabled (5 runs min, max, avg): Base: (741,748,744) With this patch: (739,748,743) So by default produce young ptes and provide a sysctl option to make the ptes old. sched: Introduce sched_busy_hysteresis_enable_cpus tunable
Currently sched busy hysteresis feature is applied only for CPUs other than the min capacity CPUs. This policy restricts the flexibility on a system with more than 2 clusters. Add a tunable to specify which CPUs needs this feature. By default, the feature is turned off for all the CPUs. sched/core: fix userspace affining threads incorrectly
Certain userspace applications, to achieve max performance, affines its threads to cpus that run the fastest. This is not always the correct strategy. For e.g. in certain architectures all the cores have the same max freq but few of them have a bigger cache. Affining to the cpus that have bigger cache is advantageous but such an application would end up affining them to all the cores. Similarly if an architecture has just one cpu that runs at max freq, it ends up crowding all its thread on that single core, which is detrimental for performance. To address this issue, we need to detect a suspicious looking affinity request from userspace and check if it links in a particular library. The latter can easily be detected by traversing executable vm areas that map a file and checking for that library name. When such a affinity request is found, change it to use a proper affinity. The suspicious affinity request, the proper affinity request and the library name can be configured by the userspace. ANDROID: add extra free kbytes tunable
Add a userspace visible knob to tell the VM to keep an extra amount of memory free, by increasing the gap between each zone's min and low watermarks. This is useful for realtime applications that call system calls and have a bound on the number of allocations that happen in any short time period. In this application, extra_free_kbytes would be left at an amount equal to or larger than than the maximum number of allocations that happen in any burst. It may also be useful to reduce the memory use of virtual machines (temporarily?), in a way that does not cause memory fragmentation like ballooning does. [ccross] Revived for use on old kernels where no other solution exists. The tunable will be removed on kernels that do better at avoiding direct reclaim. [surenb] Will be reverted as soon as Android framework is reworked to use upstream-supported watermark_scale_factor instead of extra_free_kbytes. During board initialization read the shared memory item SMEM_POWER_ON_STATUS_INFO and place it in the procfs at /proc/sys/kernel/boot_reason The data item is an integer with a bit being set to identify the reason the device was powered on. mm: oom_kill: reap memory of a task that receives SIGKILL
Free the pages parallely for a task that receives SIGKILL using the oom_reaper. This freeing of pages will help to give the pages to buddy system well advance. This reaps for the process which received SIGKILL through either sys_kill from user or kill_pid from kernel and that sending process has CAP_KILL capability. Also sysctl interface, reap_mem_on_sigkill, is added to turn on/off this feature. Since we don't do energy-aware wakeups when we are overutilized, always honoring sync wakeups in this state does not prevent wake-wide mechanics overruling the flag as normal. ANDROID: sched: Introduce sysctl_sched_cstate_aware
Introduce a new sysctl for this option, 'sched_cstate_aware'.
When this is enabled, the scheduler can make use of the idle state
indexes in order to break the tie between potential CPU candidates.

FROMLIST: sched: Introduce a sysctl for Energy Aware Scheduling
In its current state, Energy Aware Scheduling (EAS) starts automatically on asymmetric platforms having an Energy Model (EM). However, there are users who want to have an EM (for thermal management for example), but don't want EAS with it. In order to let users disable EAS explicitly, introduce a new sysctl called 'sched_energy_aware'. It is enabled by default so that EAS can start automatically on platforms where it makes sense. Flipping it to 0 rebuilds the scheduling domains and disables EAS. namei: allow restricted O_CREAT of FIFOs and regular files
Disallows open of FIFOs or regular files not owned by the user in world writable sticky directories, unless the owner is the same as that of the directory or the file is opened without the O_CREAT flag. The purpose is to make data spoofing attacks harder. This protection can be turned on and off separately for FIFOs and regular files via sysctl, just like the symlinks/hardlinks protection. This patch is based on Openwall's "HARDEN_FIFO" feature by Solar Designer. This is a brief list of old vulnerabilities that could have been prevented by this feature, some of them even allow for privilege escalation: CVE-2000-1134 CVE-2007-3852 CVE-2008-0525 CVE-2009-0416 CVE-2011-4834 CVE-2015-1838 CVE-2015-7442 CVE-2016-7489 This list is not meant to be complete. It's difficult to track down all vulnerabilities of this kind because they were often reported without any mention of this particular attack vector. In fact, before hardlinks/symlinks restrictions, fifos/regular files weren't the favorite vehicle to exploit them.
