cpu-topology: Don't error on more than CONFIG_NR_CPUS CPUs in device tree
When the kernel is configured with CONFIG_NR_CPUS smaller than the number of CPU nodes in the device tree(DT), all the CPU nodes parsing done to fetch topology information will fail. This is not reasonable as it is valid to have all the physical CPUs in the system in the DT. Let us just skip such CPU DT nodes that are not used in the kernel rather than returning an error. arm64: topology: Stop using MPIDR for topology information
[ Upstream commit 3102bc0e6ac752cc5df896acb557d779af4d82a1 ]
In the absence of ACPI or DT topology data, we fallback to haphazardly
decoding *something* out of MPIDR. Sadly, the contents of that register are
mostly unusable due to the implementation leniancy and things like Aff0
having to be capped to 15 (despite being encoded on 8 bits).
Consider a simple system with a single package of 32 cores, all under the
same LLC. We ought to be shoving them in the same core_sibling mask, but
MPIDR is going to look like:
| CPU | 0 | ... | 15 | 16 | ... | 31 |
|------+---+-----+----+----+-----+----+
| Aff0 | 0 | ... | 15 | 0 | ... | 15 |
| Aff1 | 0 | ... | 0 | 1 | ... | 1 |
| Aff2 | 0 | ... | 0 | 0 | ... | 0 |
Which will eventually yield
core_sibling(0-15) == 0-15
core_sibling(16-31) == 16-31
NUMA woes
=========
If we try to play games with this and set up NUMA boundaries within those
groups of 16 cores via e.g. QEMU:
# Node0: 0-9; Node1: 10-19
$ qemu-system-aarch64 <blah> \
-smp 20 -numa node,cpus=0-9,nodeid=0 -numa node,cpus=10-19,nodeid=1
The scheduler's MC domain (all CPUs with same LLC) is going to be built via
arch_topology.c::cpu_coregroup_mask()
In there we try to figure out a sensible mask out of the topology
information we have. In short, here we'll pick the smallest of NUMA or
core sibling mask.
node_mask(CPU9) == 0-9
core_sibling(CPU9) == 0-15
MC mask for CPU9 will thus be 0-9, not a problem.
node_mask(CPU10) == 10-19
core_sibling(CPU10) == 0-15
MC mask for CPU10 will thus be 10-19, not a problem.
node_mask(CPU16) == 10-19
core_sibling(CPU16) == 16-19
MC mask for CPU16 will thus be 16-19... Uh oh. CPUs 16-19 are in two
different unique MC spans, and the scheduler has no idea what to make of
that. That triggers the WARN_ON() added by commit
ccf74128d66c ("sched/topology: Assert non-NUMA topology masks don't (partially) overlap")
Fixing MPIDR-derived topology
=============================
We could try to come up with some cleverer scheme to figure out which of
the available masks to pick, but really if one of those masks resulted from
MPIDR then it should be discarded because it's bound to be bogus.
I was hoping to give MPIDR a chance for SMT, to figure out which threads are
in the same core using Aff1-3 as core ID, but Sudeep and Robin pointed out
to me that there are systems out there where *all* cores have non-zero
values in their higher affinity fields (e.g. RK3288 has "5" in all of its
cores' MPIDR.Aff1), which would expose a bogus core ID to userspace.
Stop using MPIDR for topology information. When no other source of topology
information is available, mark each CPU as its own core and its NUMA node
as its LLC domain.

Revert "arm64: topology: Handle CPU topology parsing failure case"
If cpu topology parsing failed, sched clusters were prepared with
empty cluster cpus and leads to erroneous results. Now sched cluster
preparation handles empty cluster cpus. so the commit 'cc620a7f0341a644
("arm64: topology: Handle CPU topology parsing failure case")' is
no more needed, remove it.

Commit 98dc19902a0b2e5348e43d6a2c39a0a7d0fc639e upstream. ACPI 6.3 adds a thread flag to represent if a CPU/PE is actually a thread. Given that the MPIDR_MT bit may not represent this information consistently on homogeneous machines we should prefer the PPTT flag if its available. sched: core: Fix usage of cpu core group mask
To find number of clusters, we depend on topology_core_cpumask(), but that returns current online sibling cpus, if cluster have offlined cpus, then finding no. of clusters could go wrong. If system booted with less no. of cpus and others comes online after bootup, then sched_up/down migrate setup breaks. Fix this by using core's possible sibling mask. While at it, refactor cpu possible siblings mask API to avoid other architecture compilation errors. arm64: topology: Handle CPU topology parsing failure case
When the CPU topology device tree node parsing is failed, the topology is reset i.e each CPU is marked as its own sibling. However the newly introduced core_possible_sibling mask is not updated. This results in an empty core_possible_sibling mask and scheduler end up preparing a cluster with empty CPUs. This results in incorrect behavior. Fix this by initializing core_possible_sibling mask for all CPUs in the reset_cpu_topology() function. The initializing is done similar to core_sibling_mask i.e each CPU is its own sibling. Note that we want to do that only in the error path i.e. reset_cpu_topology() and not in the hotplug path clear_cpu_topology() since we want to maintain core_possible_sibling_mask across hotplugs. arch_topology: Add possible sibling cpu mask for cpu_topology
Commit '5ec8b59172b4e("arm64: topology: restrict updating siblings_masks
to online cpus only")' update cpu_topology sibling mask with only online
cpus. This causes issues with walt's cluster initialization code which
assumes that cpu_coregroup_mask has all possible sibling cpus. In cases
when the system is booted with limited online cpus, using maxcpu parameter,
walt's cluster initialization code will incorrectly populate less number
of cpus than physically present and doesn't have an opportunity to
correct them later.
The issue can be fixed by populating sched_cluster cpus either with
actual device-tree provided cluster cpus or with cpufreq->related_cpus.
But it is possible that, cluster cpus and cpufreq related cpus could be
different, so use device-tree populated cluster cpus as scheduler
cluster cpus.
Add possible sibling cpu support for cpu_topology.

arm64: topology: restrict updating siblings_masks to online cpus only
It's incorrect to iterate over all the possible CPUs to update the sibling masks when any CPU is hotplugged in. In case the topology siblings masks of the CPU is removed when is it hotplugged out, we end up updating those masks when one of it's sibling is powered up again. This will provide inconsistent view. Further, since the CPU calling update_sibling_masks is yet to be set online, there's no need to compare itself with each online CPU when updating the siblings masks. This patch restricts updation of sibling masks only for CPUs that are already online. It also the drops the unnecessary cpuid check. arm64: topology: Avoid checking numa mask for scheduler MC selection
The numa mask subset check can often lead to system hang or crash during CPU hotplug and system suspend operation if NUMA is disabled. This is mostly observed on HMP systems where the CPU compute capacities are different and ends up in different scheduler domains. Since cpumask_of_node is returned instead core_sibling, the scheduler is confused with incorrect cpumasks(e.g. one CPU in two different sched domains at the same time) on CPU hotplug. Lets disable the NUMA siblings checks for the time being, as NUMA in socket machines have LLC's that will assure that the scheduler topology isn't "borken". The NUMA check exists to assure that if a LLC within a socket crosses NUMA nodes/chiplets the scheduler domains remain consistent. This code will likely have to be re-enabled in the near future once the NUMA mask story is sorted. At the moment its not necessary because the NUMA in socket machines LLC's are contained within the NUMA domains. Further, as a defensive mechanism during hot-plug, lets assure that the LLC siblings are also masked. arm64: topology: divorce MC scheduling domain from core_siblings
Now that we have an accurate view of the physical topology we need to represent it correctly to the scheduler. Generally MC should equal the LLC in the system, but there are a number of special cases that need to be dealt with. In the case of NUMA in socket, we need to assure that the sched domain we build for the MC layer isn't larger than the DIE above it. Similarly for LLC's that might exist in cross socket interconnect or directory hardware we need to assure that MC is shrunk to the socket or NUMA node. This patch builds a sibling mask for the LLC, and then picks the smallest of LLC, socket siblings, or NUMA node siblings, which gives us the behavior described above. This is ever so slightly different than the similar alternative where we look for a cache layer less than or equal to the socket/NUMA siblings. The logic to pick the MC layer affects all arm64 machines, but only changes the behavior for DT/MPIDR systems if the NUMA domain is smaller than the core siblings (generally set to the cluster). Potentially this fixes a possible bug in DT systems, but really it only affects ACPI systems where the core siblings is correctly set to the socket siblings. Thus all currently available ACPI systems should have MC equal to LLC, including the NUMA in socket machines where the LLC is partitioned between the NUMA nodes. Propagate the topology information from the PPTT tree to the cpu_topology array. We can get the thread id and core_id by assuming certain levels of the PPTT tree correspond to those concepts. The package_id is flagged in the tree and can be found by calling find_acpi_cpu_topology_package() which terminates its search when it finds an ACPI node flagged as the physical package. arm64: topology: Fix handling of multi-level cluster MPIDR-based detection
The only requirement the scheduler has on cluster IDs is that they must be unique. When enumerating the topology based on MPIDR information the kernel currently generates cluster IDs by using the first level of affinity above the core ID (either level one or two depending on if the core has multiple threads) however the ARMv8 architecture allows for up to three levels of affinity. This means that an ARMv8 system may contain cores which have MPIDRs identical other than affinity level three which with current code will cause us to report multiple cores with the same identification to the scheduler in violation of its uniqueness requirement. Ensure that we do not violate the scheduler requirements on systems that uses all the affinity levels by incorporating both affinity levels two and three into the cluser ID when the cores are not threaded. While no currently known hardware uses multi-level clusters it is better to program defensively, this will help ease bringup of systems that have them and will ensure that things like distribution install media do not need to be respun to replace kernels in order to deploy such systems. In the worst case the system will work but perform suboptimally until a kernel modified to handle the new topology better is installed, in the best case this will be an adequate description of such topologies for the scheduler to perform well. arm64: topology: Implement basic CPU topology support
Add basic CPU topology support to arm64, based on the existing pre-v8 code and some work done by Mark Hambleton. This patch does not implement any topology discovery support since that should be based on information from firmware, it merely implements the scaffolding for integration of topology support in the architecture. No locking of the topology data is done since it is only modified during CPU bringup with external serialisation from the SMP code. The goal is to separate the architecture hookup for providing topology information from the DT parsing in order to ease review and avoid blocking the architecture code (which will be built on by other work) with the DT code review by providing something simple and basic. Following patches will implement support for interpreting topology information from MPIDR and for parsing the DT topology bindings for ARM, similar patches will be needed for ACPI.
